What is Single Sign-On (SSO)?

Single Sign-On (SSO) is a system that allows a seamless login process to enable a user to access multiple applications with a single username and password. The SSO service is an important part of Identity and Access Management (IAM), which makes overall password management easier. With the SSO software, the end-user's time and efforts are saved as they don't need to constantly log in and out separately into multiple web, on-premises, and cloud apps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of Single Sign-On (SSO)?

  1. Stronger passwords due to fewer logins.
  2. Eliminates password reuse across apps.
  3. Simplifies password enforcement for IT teams.
  4. Centralized Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) setup.
  5. Reduces time spent on password recovery.
  6. Improves security by managing credentials internally.

What are the types of Single Sign-On (SSO)?

There are several SSO protocols and standards, including:

  1. SAML: An open standard that enables secure data exchange between applications for web-based SSO.
  2. OAuth: An authorization protocol that allows apps to share user data securely without re-authentication.
  3. OpenID Connect (OIDC): Built on OAuth 2.0, it enables users to log in across multiple apps with one session.
  4. Kerberos: Provides mutual authentication between users and servers via tokens.
  5. Smart Card Authentication:Uses physical cards and cryptographic keys for secure authentication.

Is Single Sign-On (SSO) secure?

Yes, SSO can be secure when properly implemented. Key security measures include:

  1. Defining user roles and permissions carefully.
  2. Applying stricter security for high-privilege users, such as location or device-based policies.
  3. Integrating strong Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
  4. Using risk-based authentication to adjust security based on potential risks.
  5. Detailed logging and reporting to monitor authentication activities.

How does Single Sign-On (SSO) work?

Firstly, the user tries to get access to their desired application/website, which are from the Service Provider.

  1. The application/website (Service Provider) redirects the SSO request to Identity Provider for authentication.
  2. The user tries to sign in with their Identity Provider credentials.
  3. Once IDP authentication is successful, Identity Provider (IDP) sends back the Single Sign-On response to the Service Provider.
  4. Upon receiving the SSO Response, the user is granted access to log in and access the resource or application.
  5. Here the user can access all the other apps/websites from the Service Provider which are pre-configured for SSO (Single Sign-On).

What is an SSO Authentication Token?

An SSO token is a collection of data or information that is passed from one system to another during the Single Sign-On process. The data can simply be a user’s email address and information about which system is sending the token. The certificate that is used for this digital signature is exchanged during the initial configuration process.

What are the Different Types of Single Sign-On?

Single sign-On (SSO) comes in various forms to cater to different organizational needs. The primary types of SSO are as follows: Web SSO, Enterprise SSO, and Mobile SSO.

What is IDP initiated and SP Initiated SSO?

SP-initiated Single Sign-On: This is when the user starts to sign in from your application (SP) and is sent to their Identity Provider (IdP) to log in and then redirected back to your application.

IDP-initiated Single Sign-On: The user logs in directly to the IdP instead of the application's login page.Read more about IDP-initaiated and SP-initiated SSO
